Nuance has teamed up with Aldebaran Robotics to announce that Aldebaran’s renowned NAO Robot will integrate Nuance’s conversational voice capabilities to deliver a more natural and compelling experience between humans and robots.
NAO, a humanoid robot developed by French company Aldebaran Robotics, is here to serve one key purpose – to contribute to the well-being of humans. He listens to you, understands and derives meaning from interactions, recognizes and remembers faces, expresses and understands emotions, and reacts accordingly. Bruce Maisonnier, the founder of Aldebaran Robotics, explains that in order for this whole process to work and to elicit a truly human-like interaction, powerful conversational voice capabilities must be integrated into NAO’s core technology.
NAO has relied on Nuance’s embedded voice recognition technology since 2011, but by now leveraging Nuance’s cloud-based voice recognition and expressive text-to-speech through Nuance’s NDEV developer program he can have more natural and expressive conversations with people – in nineteen different languages. And with Nuance’s help, he will now feature a custom text-to-speech voice specifically designed to match his personality. This will allow the robot to better adapt to different environments. You can watch NAO’s personality unfold for yourself in the video above, as NAO grooves along to classics like “YMCA” and exchanges jokes with Maisonnier and Nuance’s Steve Chambers, president, sales and marketing, and executive vice present, Nuance.
NAO robots featuring Nuance’s Natural Language Understand and text-to-speech will begin to ship in early 2014.
