We have received a number of inquiries regarding the availability of our mobile apps in various languages and dialects around the world, and we are thrilled that so many of you are eager to make these applications a part of your mobile lifestyle! Nuance is a global company with speech recognition applications deployed in numerous languages and in multiple countries, and we are regularly evaluating expansion opportunities for our line of popular apps.
Over the course of the past year, we have dedicated a tremendous amount of energy towards broadening our language support base and optimizing our apps for mobile users around the globe. Consider the following:
  • Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search now support U.S. English, U.K. English, Australian English, German, European and Canadian French, Italian, Americas and European Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese
  • FlexT9 for Android, launched just this past January, supports U.S. and U.K. English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish

And make no mistake; we have no intention of stopping there! As soon as specific plans and updates become available, we strive to convey this information directly to you at the earliest possible time.

We would also like to take this opportunity to share a bit on the science of speech recognition and how this factors into the decision making process with respect to support for additional languages. There are many variables which are engineered into the design of our applications: different use cases, language models, noise conditions, device type, microphone quality, network connectivity, cultural elements, regional spelling variation, and much more. As you can see, there is a tremendous amount of research and engineering behind each application; and this is also true of additional language deployments even within the same application.
We are firmly committed to maintaining the same high quality that users have come to expect of our apps in every language that we support. It is this commitment that serves to ensure that the user experience is not simply consistent across all markets, but consistently exceptional. We greatly appreciate your patience as we work to ensure that the standards remain high in every market and language we support.
As always, we appreciate hearing from mobile users and fans around the world. We evaluate new language additions based upon a number of considerations, including market demand from our Consumers, Operators, and Device customers among them. Your input is greatly appreciated here, so please continue communicating with us!
