What does this app do?
CSpeak Anywhere, developed by Clinically Speaking, is an HTML-native application that leverages the HTML capabilities of the GE Centricity EMR. Speech recognition software has been built into the core of the application, allowing full voice recognition and command and control capabilities.
What challenges or needs did you see/experience in the healthcare industry that drove you to build this application?
Healthcare providers are looking for improved usability with EHRs, including the GE Centricity user interface. Leveraging cloud-based clinical speech recognition technology, CSpeak Anywhere supports clinicians with a better user experience, while removing the technical burden placed on IT departments.
What is the big “A-ha! moment” for your end users when you first demo your app for them?
What started out as an exercise to bring voice recognition to a mobile platform, turned into much more. In the initial design phase, it became clear quite early on that we were designing a mini-EMR, one has all of the power and capability of GE Centricity, but that is greatly simplified. When providers see all of the relevant patient data on their mobile device and are able to document right then and there, you can hear their excitement about being “free” from the desktop version of Centricity, while still being compliant with Meaningful Use.
What inspires you when creating an mhealth app?
We are known for creating apps and interfaces for Centricity that leverage speech recognition to improve user experience, so it was only natural that we take this new technology provided by Nuance and create something meaningful for our Centricity users.
How has Nuance technology changed your app?
Nuance cloud-based clinical speech recognition drives the entire application – every field is voice enabled, as well as all the application menus. The underlying system commands allow the user to complete tasks without having to point-and-click, and even change screens in some cases.
How does this particular app help remove the technology barrier between the patient and physician?
The application allows the physician to document in real-time on a mobile device (such as a Surface tablet) as well as on the exam room or office PC. It provides access to the Centricity application with embedded clinical speech recognition by Nuance, making the point-of-care interaction with the patient more consistent.
Does your app integrate with any patient-facing apps as well?
We are developing a patient component, as well, which will allow patients to enter their responses to health history questions via voice.
Does it communicate with other health devices or apps?
This version of CSpeak Anywhere is an HTML application. It resides inside the Centricity EMR itself.
What is your vision for how this particular app can evolve over the next 5 years?
CSpeak Anywhere has the potential to revolutionize the Centricity application. Harnessing the capabilities of the GE EMR through the HTML platform and powering it with advanced technologies such as the Nuance Speech Anywhere Services, we envision secure messaging, eVisits, and telemedicine capabilities, all with integrated voice.
In one sentence, tell us what you think the future of mobile health will look like.
Mobile health must evolve to supply new capabilities to the healthcare provider, not just mirror current capabilities on a mobile device.
