App-of-the-month: ScribeIQ

Leveraging cloud-based technology, this app enables physicians to access their patients’ EMR on any mobile device, from any location.

What does this app do?
Leveraging cloud-based technology, ScribeIQ enables clinicians access to their patients’ electronic medical record (EMR) on any mobile device, from any location. The app displays patient information in a simplified, easy-to-read format, and enables clinicians to make medical record updates through an efficient and intuitive mobile platform. Using cloud-based clinical speech recognition by Nuance, it empowers physicians to:

  • Efficiently review and update clinical information, document the entire patient visit and have that information flow seamlessly back into the EMR as structured data;
  • Capitalize on the improved speed, accuracy and ease-of-use dictation provides while adding the benefit of structured documentation;
  • Be more mobile by liberating them from their offices and dictation stations, and allowing them to become more engaged with their patients while reducing reliance on manual transcription.


What challenges or needs did you see/experience in the healthcare industry that drove you to build this application?
Concerned with the impact federal initiatives would have on patient care and clinician productivity, the challenge EMR vendors face in creating applications with a smaller form factor (such as a tablet or phone), and the difficulties clinicians were having accessing patients’ medical information outside the clinic (or even outside their office) sparked the genesis of ScribeIQ and the development of a better solution to growing demands.


What is the big “A-ha! moment” for your end users when you first demo your app for them?
The “A-ha! moment” for most of our clinical users is two-fold:

1. realizing they can have mobility (in exam rooms, at the hospital bedside, on call/after-hours access)
2.  seeing an intuitive workflow on a familiar device that lets them return to more efficient methods of documentation without compromising the quality of the medical record


What inspires you when creating an mhealth app?
Ease-of-use is key when creating an app.  We believe that for an app to truly save time, it needs to be intuitive and not require extensive training to figure out.  We know that clinicians would rather spend their time with a patient than trying to figure out what button to push to add a problem.  This enhanced usability leads to overall better patient care and outcomes.


How has Nuance technology changed your app?
Nuance technology has provided us with the ability to integrate the most efficient way to document a visit – your voice.  Regardless of how fast someone can type, it is faster to speak and the high medical terminology accuracy rate dramatically increases usability.


Do you have a customer quote about your app?
“ScribeIQ allows me to quickly and easily interact with my patients and their medical records in a way that makes sense clinically. Instead of being forced into workflows that were not designed around the patient encounter, I can review relevant clinical information, quickly document the visit, and appropriately capture my charges while creating a document that will be truly meaningful to other members of the healthcare team and I can do this anywhere – at the bedside, in my office, or from home while on-call. How does this particular app help remove the barrier between the patient and physician?
ScribeIQ allows clinicians to return their full attention to their patients through intuitive methods of documentation that free them from being tethered to work stations. This helps improve the rapport between the patient and the provider, drives efficiency, and gives clinicians more time with their patients while maintaining their schedule and improving satisfaction.


Does your app integrate with any patient-facing apps as well?
The app works in concert with another app we provide for patient registration, consent form capture, and patient history called “eSignature,” which synchronizes with the EMR.


Does it communicate with other health devices or apps?
We currently integrate with GE Centricity and Allscripts electronic medical record applications as well as iOS devices.


What is your vision for how this particular app can evolve over the next 5 years?
We see our two products (eSignature and ScribeIQ) as a simplified entry point to help make patients and clinicians comfortable with new mobile technology advancements so we can continue looking for and developing more need-based solutions that will add efficiency to the mHealth /eHealth workflow within the healthcare industry.


In one sentence, tell us what you think the future of mobile health will look like.
The future of mobile health will be simple and connected; with patients as the hub, all members of the health care team can interact with the patient, his or her medical record, and each other in a way that truly serves the patient and improves health outcomes.
