This is part of our series highlighting apps that power physicians with voice using the new Dragon Medical One cloud platform.
One of the first mobile productivity apps to be voice-powered through this newly announced cloud platform, Doc Halo, aims to continuously improve the way healthcare professionals communicate. The Doc Halo Clinical Communication Platform is a secure, HIPAA-compliant communication platform for healthcare professionals that gives physicians, nurses and staff the ability to communicate directly via text without worrying about compromising protected health information. Doc Halo also allows clinicians to access system-wide call schedules, hand off care to other providers, activate critical teams, access critical lab results, receive after-hours call center messages, eliminate the need for pagers and more.
Jonathon Dreyer: What challenges or needs did you see or experience in the healthcare industry that drove you to build the Doc Halo Clinical Communication Platform?
Jon Jansen: Our founders, Dr. Jose Barreau and Dr. Amit Gupta, had the simple goal of wanting to communicate directly with other physicians, nurses and staff without having to play phone tag all day. Their vision has grown into a communication platform that aligns care teams in various ways to dramatically improve patient care. Our whole team is inspired and motivated to create products that improve patient care and the quality of life for healthcare professionals.
JD: What is the big “A-ha! moment” for your users when they first see or try Doc Halo?
JJ: There are many “A-ha! moments” for our customers. Among physicians, they love seeing how easy it is to locate specialists within their network through the directory and message them instantly. Primary care physicians can consult with specialists in minutes, not days. Staff members love the “delivered” and “read” status reports that confirm critical messages have been received so they don’t need to wonder if they should page the doctor again. Administrators love the analytics of the app and having the ability to track referral patterns, identity trends and more. In the recent KLAS report “Secure Messaging 2015: First Look at Who Providers Are Considering and Why,” 85 percent of secure messaging users reported that implementation of the new technology improved workflow efficiency.
JD: How does Doc Halo help remove the barrier between the patient and physician and/or enhance the physician/patient consultation?
JJ: The Doc Halo Clinical Communication Platform improves patient encounters by eliminating distracting interruptions. For example, instead of a nurse knocking on the exam room door to tell the doctor he has a phone call, the doctor receives a discreet text message with a distinct alert to indicate if the message is urgent or if it can wait, meaning the patient in the exam room does not notice the interruption.
JD: How do you expect Nuance technology to change your app? What does the power of cloud-based voice bring to the technology?
JJ: It really gets to the heart of our mission, which is improving patient care with technology that makes communication easier. Voice technology adds yet another level of speed and convenience for busy healthcare professionals. More importantly, Nuance’s healthcare-specific technology ensures security and accuracy – something that absolutely cannot be compromised when discussing medication dosages and patient orders.
