It takes an ecosystem

Improving patient care and unburdening physicians is a team sport. Teams of compassionate and committed people must work together to create and deliver the best solutions.

Healthcare is a team sport. It takes teams of compassionate and committed people working together to create access to healthcare, diagnose, and treat every patient. Some of the team members may never actually meet the patient, but their work in a lab, or behind a computer screen or on the other end of phone is still vital to the effort.

Healthcare technology also takes a team with a broad spectrum of expertise to bring important innovations to physicians and patients. Our team increasingly extends far outside the company when it comes to fulfilling our mission.

It’s important that we continuously keep challenging our own answers to the most important core questions: How can we best accomplish our goal of unburdening physicians?

Which tools and technologies can help us deliver accuracy, efficiency and value to our clients, so they can improve patient care?

What systems and processes will most benefit physicians and the patients who rely on them?

Most importantly, which relationships are most crucial on this journey?

We take and seek inspiration in many areas. One good example is a rather new member of the Nuance family, the Primordial Innovation Lab.  Primordial partners with industry leaders such as Lahey Clinic, Yale, University of Colorado and many others to create custom radiology solutions, most of which are unique in the market.

This innovative, nimble approach is the “special sauce” that fuels clinical transformation, and we honor their unconventional approach. As one of Primordial’s co-founders recently commented, “Good ideas can come from just about anyone.” We agree wholeheartedly.

We feel that the future of collaborative work to advance clinical transformation is brighter than ever.

With that in mind, we recently unveiled the world’s first open platform for developers, data scientists and radiologists to accelerate the development, deployment, and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) for medical imaging.

The Nuance AI Marketplace for Diagnostic Imaging is a first-of-its-kind coalition on several levels.

But I think one of its most exciting characteristics is that the partnership involves a wonderful diverse set of new partners — graphics chipmaker Nvidia, the American College of Radiology, Ohio State University, Lunit, Radlogics, Aidence and Teracon, to name a few. These new teams are well-positioned to come up with new solutions. According to a recent article by Jurgen Meffert of McKinsey & Co., new innovation ecosystems are increasingly shaping new offerings and helping companies deliver better solutions, faster than before.

Transforming healthcare won’t happen in isolation. In this ever-evolving ecosystem, collaboration is key to developing and delivering the best solutions for physicians and patients.
