How can Gen X put their technology to work?

Generation X is at risk of slowing down, or more specifically, not embracing various technologies fully to improve productivity and the way work gets done. This article takes a look at a common software tool, PDF, and describes new ways Gen X can take advantage of the business world’s most widely used document format.

“Generation X” – the generation between baby boomers and millennials – is often thought of as the first truly technological generation. Coming of age with the home computer, Gen X watched the world transition from the era of the pay phone to the era of the smart phone. Often called the “Entrepreneur Generation,” a significant number of businesses we all know and love were created by Gen Xers, including such household names as Google, Amazon and YouTube.

Yet in technology today, it’s important not to get left behind. Gen Xers can be slower to embrace new innovations than younger generations – those “digital natives” now entering the workplace.

Admittedly, it can be a challenge to adapt to new technology and related best practices – but it is key in increasing personal productivity and remaining competitive. One of the easiest areas to see this at work is in PDF software. PDF is the most widely used format for businesses today, but many workers don’t take full advantage of all of its features to tackle common tasks in new, more efficient ways.

In this article, we take a closer look at some of the most common objections and offer suggestions for ways tools like Power PDF can help overcome them.

“The old way works well enough”

Sometimes, we’re resistant to change because the “same-old, same-old” approach solution seems sufficient, even if it’s not perfect. But settling for “good enough” is a recipe for getting left behind.

According to a research report from the Standish Group, nearly 50% of software features are seldom used or not used at all. This means updates might be ignored or shortcuts might never be discovered because users are mired in old ways of working. Overcoming this “feature inertia” leads to greater efficiency, more streamlined operations and more time spent on important business challenges.

“It’s going to be take a lot of work to change things over”

For plenty of Gen Xers, the idea of changing file formats or converting documents may seem overly complicated or even impossible.

Hopefully they aren’t still wasting time retyping documents since there is always a better way. For example with Power PDF, converting documents to and from PDF format is simple – eliminating all the inefficiency and wasted time of retyping data or filling out forms.

“It’s going to be so hard to learn”

We’ve all been there – the intimidation that comes when attempting to learn a new software tool, feature or function. It’s understandable, but consider that in today’s competitive software market, many consumers have begun to advocate for themselves, resulting in the proliferation of easy-to-use, intuitive software applications.

Now software tools, like Nuance’s Power PDF, are designed to work for you, rather than the other way around. For example, Power PDF’s familiar ribbon-styled interface and intuitive setup make it so easy to take the next step towards becoming a PDF superstar.

“But how will I keep private data safe?”

Some Gen Xers are concerned about the security of their PDFs, which may contain sensitive business, financial or legal information. Power PDF is the perfect tool to put their fears at ease. With tools like Rights Management Security, Power PDF offers full security.

Also encryption travels with the document, rather than the device, meaning that its creator can control who is allowed to view, read, edit, or comment on a document. This encryption can let you rest easy, reassured that only those you authorize can have access to the sensitive information within your document.
