Using Dragon to build a better paperwork process

Construction Project Executive Frank Allard has been in the industry for more than 30 years, and recently started using Dragon to help with his paperwork responsibilities. We caught up with Frank to learn more about why he started using Dragon and what benefits it has afforded him so far.

Speech recognition is helping construction executives better manage their paperwork requirements.

Frank Allard is a construction Project Executive with more than 30 years on the job. Overseeing the construction of large commercial building projects, Frank typically manages and assists a number of project teams. Like many industries, everyone has a preconceived notion of the responsibilities that come with the profession. But construction, like other industries, also comes with its fair share of paperwork, too – including documentation requirements, spreadsheets, and reports that are all critical components of the building and budget process.

For Frank, this means that proposals, formal business letters, and monthly progress reports are tantamount to his construction projects. Recently, Frank started using Dragon to help with all of his paperwork needs. We caught up with him to learn more about his experience so far.

Nuance: How long have you been using Dragon? Are you using a PC or a Mac?
Frank: I use Dragon for the PC. I’m a relatively new user – I’ve had the software for about six weeks.

 

What made you want to try Dragon in the first place?
I saw a few videos and demonstrations of Dragon and it seemed really easy and fast. I figured it would be worth giving it a shot.


What have you been using Dragon for the most?

So far, I have used Dragon primarily to compose documents throughout the work day. These can include proposals, business letters, monthly reports, etc. I am a Project Executive, so it is definitely important for me to get through all of the paperwork quickly. With that said, I am of course judged on accuracy and overall quality, and Dragon plays an important role in maintaining both.

 

For your documentation, why do you prefer speaking instead of typing?

I have found speaking to be much faster than typing, and it is much easier on my hands. It has been a relief to not have to type for the entire day. Overall, I would say that the biggest benefit is being able to get work done faster and easier.

 

Has Dragon increased your productivity?

Yes – I don’t have an exact number, but I know that Dragon has saved me time since I started using it. Creating lengthy documents is a good example. For a document that is anywhere from six to 20 pages long, I can complete it in at least half of the time that it would take to type it out by hand.

 

Would you recommend Dragon to other people in your field?

I would definitely recommend Dragon. It’s very intuitive. Like anything new, it can take a little getting used to, but you’ll notice it getting more accurate the more that you use it. After a short time, you really will appreciate how quickly you can get your thoughts and ideas onto the screen in written form.

 

What tips or advice would you give to another professional who is thinking about trying speech recognition?

You should try it. It’s well worth the investment. Like anything new, you should allow yourself a short period to get used to it, but I’m confident that you’ll find that the time spent is well worth it.
